When build season starts the excitement starts to get intense. Facebook is where you can see the designing team pull together to CAD the robot. Then the build team takes over and builds in 6 weeks. During that time the marketing team is out trying to get sponsors for the $5000 out of pocket extra that can be spent on parts and travel money for buses and food. And the safety team catalogs all the parts and prices used to create the robot. They also ensure the rules are being followed and safety is the first thing everyone from the team thinks of before starting anything. No Sense of Humor

So the suit was not a favorite of the mentors.

The price was a bit too high for a team uniform that usually consists of a T-shirt.  Rumor has is one team member wants to still buy the suit.  Can you guess which one??

No Long Now

Now that we are into the second semester. Project Jabberwocky is really starting to come together  and bond  as a team.  There has been a couple of team parties and movie nights where everyone is invited and the seniors are giving rides home to the lower class men of the team.
We are about 5 week from the reveal of what the topic will be for competition and we have our first site, Hartford. Speculation is still leaning towards a 1980's arcade video game.  Pac-Man was one of the biggest new arcades games. They found this as a possible team uniform...

Should Schools Promote Academic teams the same way they promote the Athletic teams?

This is their sport

After talking with the team, I was able to speak to the parents off camera.
Understanding the importance of fundraising for this type of team. Not many people understand academic teams and the lack of financial support they receive from the schools.  For these kids their “sport” is building and completing with robots. Like team sports the school does offer to let us use the robotics room. The give our team a small locked area. Other than that the team is on its own. Our team has purchased a machine that would help in the building but the school refuses to let us bring it in and place in our locked area.
Athletic teams get buses for their events, academic teams fund their own trips. All funds are raised by the team.  These are our future engineers.  These kids will more than likely become successful in an engineering field.   But this is where a significant amount of school money is spent. How many professional athletes did your high school produce?  Maybe 1?

Why Robotics?
I briefly spoke with Project Jabberwocky team, those who were willing, to ask why robotics?

How do they see Robotics fitting into their futures?

They all seem to understand that robotics will help with their future and the paths they are taking.  All Project Jabberwocky members are college bound.

With the first meeting under our belt, we welcome new members. We have about 15 students interested in our team. Most are underclassmen which is great!  New team members also bring new parents and mentors to help guide our kids.  Hopefully these students will stay with Project Jabberwocky for the rest of their high school career.
These new students will be introduced to programming, the robot uses Java, Computer Animated Designing, Building, Marketing and Safety.

This year's competition is being called First Power Up. Along with the teaser video we still do no know what obstacles the robots will have to overcome.

New captains are being chosen and brain storming has begun.

I'm thinking 1980's video games...
So get out your parachute pants, flash dance shirt, leg warmers and big hair!
